Celebrating International woman’s day

When we envision the history of boating, our minds often conjure images of rugged sailors and intrepid explorers navigating uncharted waters. However, behind the helm of many great maritime adventures are the remarkable women who defied societal norms and embarked on their own journeys of exploration and discovery. As we celebrate their courage and resilience, let’s embark on a voyage through history to uncover the stories of some of the most influential women boaters of all time.

Inspired by her travels, Annie set her sights on a new challenge – sailing around the world. With little sailing experience and a bold determination, she embarked on a voyage aboard the yacht “Annie” in 1895. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks along the way, including storms, shipwrecks, and even sabotage, Annie persevered and became a symbol of female empowerment and determination.

Ida Lewis:Known as the “Bravest Woman in America,” Ida Lewis was a legendary lighthouse keeper who saved numerous lives along the treacherous waters of Rhode Island’s Newport Harbor. Born in 1842, Ida began assisting her father at the Lime Rock Lighthouse at a young age and eventually took over as its keeper after his passing. Over the years, Ida’s daring rescues earned her widespread acclaim and recognition, making her a celebrated figure in maritime history and a trailblazer for women in the boating industry.

Kay Cottee:In 1988, Australian sailor Kay Cottee achieved a historic feat by becoming the first woman to complete a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe. Setting sail aboard her yacht “Blackmore’s First Lady,” Kay braved treacherous seas and extreme weather conditions during her 189-day journey. Her remarkable achievement inspired generations of women to pursue their dreams and challenge the limits of what was thought possible.

Florence Arthaud: French sailor Florence Arthaud made history in 1990 when she became the first woman to win the prestigious Route du Rhum solo transatlantic race. Known as the “Little Fiancée of the Atlantic,” Florence’s fearless spirit and unwavering determination propelled her to victory against formidable competitors and challenging conditions.
