The 2024 Olympic Flame Sets Sail on a 19th Century Adventure
Ahoy, mateys! The Olympic flame has embarked on an epic journey from Greece to France aboard the magnificent Belem, a 127-year-old sailing ship. This historic vessel is not your average mode of transport, but then again, the Olympic flame is no ordinary passenger!
The Voyage: On a sunny Saturday in Greece, the Olympic flame bid farewell to its homeland and boarded the Belem for an unforgettable adventure. Setting sail across the Mediterranean Sea, this fiery traveler will journey 2000 kilometers over 12 days, making its way to the port city of Marseille, France. It’s due to arrive on May 8th, so mark your calendars!
The Flame’s French Tour: Once it arrives in Marseille, the Olympic flame won’t be taking a holiday. Oh no, this flame has places to go and people to see! It’ll be touring across France, including its overseas territories, before finally arriving at the Opening Ceremony on July 26th.
The Handover: Before setting sail, the Olympic flame was officially handed over to the French organizers at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. This historic stadium, where the first modern games were held in 1896, provided the perfect backdrop for this momentous occasion.
The Final Torchbearer: Greek water polo player Ioannis Fountoulis had the honor of being the last in a long line of torchbearers. Using the flame to light a cauldron at the Panathenaic Stadium, Fountoulis ensured that the flame was ready for its voyage across the sea.
The Journey Begins: The Olympic flame may have set sail from Greece, but its journey actually began on April 16th in Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games. From there, a relay of torchbearers carried it along a 5,000-kilometer route through Greece, including several islands and an overnight stop on the ancient Acropolis.
As the Belem sets sail with the 2024 Olympic flame on board, we can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and wonder. This isn’t just a journey from Greece to France; it’s a voyage through history, tradition, and the spirit of the Olympic Games. So here’s to the Olympic flame, the Belem, and the incredible adventure that lies ahead! Bon voyage!
