In 2025, the Coast Guard marks its 235th anniversary—a testament to centuries of bravery, dedication, and service along America’s waterways, coasts, and beyond.
A Brief History of the U.S. Coast Guard
Founded on August 4, 1790, the Coast Guard was established by Alexander Hamilton as the “Revenue Cutter Service.” Its original mission was to collect customs duties and prevent smuggling, making it the nation’s first line of defense on the seas. Over time, its responsibilities expanded to include maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, environmental protection, and national defense.
In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service, officially forming the modern Coast Guard we recognize today. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has served in every major conflict, from World Wars to homeland security operations, always safeguarding lives and protecting America’s maritime interests.
