What is Bioluminescence
Welcome to CRUISE COCOA’s blog. Where we would like to introduce you to the rich history, culture, environment, and the wildlife that inhabits our beautiful state of FLORIDA. What is bioluminescence? Come Book your ticket to see firsthand!
A special phenomenon happens every summer here in the Indian River Lagoon. As well as only a few other places around the world once the sun goes down.
Everywhere the water becomes agitated the water turns a glowing blue. Just like a 4th of July freshly cracked glowstick. In the Indian River Lagoon our bioluminescence season starts around the end of May. It continues as the water temperature rises through the summer. During peak season you can witness the bioluminescence in abundance.

So what is Bioluminescence?
Bioluminescence is the “production and emission of light by living organisms.” In Florida’s summer months here in the lagoon it is a Dinoflagellate marine plankton. There are more than 18 different dinoflagellates that emit this blue-green light. These dinoflagellates contain luciferase, which is an enzyme that creates that bioluminescence. And luciferin which is a chlorophyll like ring that allows the bioluminescence to react on it.
There are several different animals that produce this light. Fireflies are some of the most famous ways to witness this experience on land. But there are many marine animals throughout the oceans and waterways which also produce this glow. Such as our local comb jellyfish.

It can be activated by a boat motor cutting through the water, a paddle from a kayak or by simply splashing around in it. Dip your hand in the water, raise it out, and see the glowing sapphires as the drip down your arm. As the local wildlife swims through they agitate it as well. We can see the fish zigzagging, dolphins “torpedoing” up and down, and rays flying majestically along. Whether you choose to join us at CRUSIE COCOA by boat or take your own adventure, this is an experience you won’t forget anytime soon. Book your Bio Tour Today!
